Pixelated lines can’t convey the beauty of a blossom, spreadsheets don’t dream in colour and conveyor belts aren’t passionate about their product. Luckily for the design world, Johanna Basford does all of these things.
Johanna is passionate about good design, well made products and bringing beauty into her customers' environments.
Uniquely, she chooses to hand draw all of her design work, which gives each design an inherent character and organic essence that computer generated work lacks. When you buy a Johanna Basford product, you know the design began as a doodle in a sketch book and not a pixel on a plasma, and in an industry flooded with mass produced, soulless clutter, objects with a story and which convey another human’s passion for what they do, are precious.
Taking inspiration from her childhood home on a fish farm in rural Aberdeenshire, Johanna draws each intricate motif by hand, before individually silk screen printing the patterns to form her distinctive rolls of hand printed wallpapers, fabrics and lighting. Delicate tangles of imagined botanics peppered with butterflies and birds are translated into tactile panels of pattern or distinctive interior accessories which add tangible luxury and aesthetic character to your interior.
NEW for summer 2007:Response Wallpaper (TM) by Johanna Basford, a collection of environment responsive wallpapers hand printed with a combination of heat / light sensitive and glow in the dark inks (click for more details)
In addition to the studio's signature monochrome palette, Johanna offers customers a bespoke colour match service. Provide us with a colour swatch and we'll mix an ink to match it. For the ultimate in exclusivity, why not commission a unique piece? Johanna creates bespoke pieces for both residential and commercial spaces, as well as freelance design work for a variety of applications from handmade stationary and wedding invitations to logo creation and ceramic design.
Johanna's hand printed and limited edition work has featured recently in Elle Decoration, Homes and Interiors Scotland, The Guardian, The Independent and many other publications, (find out more).
